Why can’t my mind come up with lines like this while awake?

Awoke from a spooky dream this morning.

Was watching Tip, the dog my late Poppa used to have back in the 1970s, jump into my Poppa’s brown station wagon to go hunting with him – which normally he didn’t get to go and do. Then Poppa drove off with him and I realised I was dreaming. My Poppa passed away in 1989.

I woke up – in my dream.

I walked out of the spare bedroom at my Nanna’s old place at Wangary, walked up to her and with my Poppa’s passing in mind, told her that I had a dream about he and Tip going hunting.

Nanna turned around, shrouded in shadows and said “Yes. I know. He said we’d all be seeing him soon.”

Then I woke up.

Spooky stuff. Don’t usually think of lines like that when I’m awake. Why not? Any clues?

  1. As a working theory, maybe your dream happened to head in that general direction, and then pulled that line out of a ghost/horror story you have read? I think I’ve seen variations on that line a the climax of at least one story.

Considered calmly and in context, though, that line isn’t really all that scary. After all, “seeing him” didn’t mean “dying” in the dream, it just meant “having a dream about him” — and you had already done it. And (unless she’s dead, too, and you didn’t mention it) there’s nothing particularly creepy about her saying that. The more you think about it, the more the scaryness breaks down. But that’s the way dreams are — according to researchers, when you dream your emotions are firing off at full strength independently of what would be appropriate to the subject of the dream.

(I had a dream once which was an almost perfect illustration of this. In the dream, my feet were tired, and I took off my shoes and socks to relax, only to discover that there were horrible semi-solid knobs growing out of me, like skin tags but big and thick and solid and with structure, with bony nodules at the ends. It was terrifying and disgusting to a degree absolutely unimaginable, to have these horrible alien things attached to me. I woke up and sat up on the edge of the bed, only to discover that the dream was true — these things were right there on my feet. I started to panic, and then I woke up a little more and it suddenly struck me that those were my toes. Even after I figured that out, though, the horror of the dream was such that it was several days before my toes looked normal to me again.)

Actually, it was unambiguously like “he told me we are all going to be dead like him soon!” Her statement wasn’t about dreams, per se. You aren’t being sinister enough. 😛

Just for a bit of context, my family tree on that side of the family resembles one that grew up in a wood where it rained chainsaws.

Or maybe with some of the nasty people I knew back in the day, I can see a subtle death threat for what it is. If I woke up with a severed horse head with a tag saying “From, Poppa”, that would have just been lame. 😉

Well, I was thinking more of “scary” as an abstract kind of scary. I wasn’t actually scared, I just woke up thinking, “hey, that was a good piece of scary dialogue.”

In fact, there was a general incredulity, either to the supernatural allusion of the statement or to my Nanna’s unfortunate track record for credulity – Through the 1990s, she was a Mormon who liked watching the X-Files (which I watched with her through 1995.)

I started to panic, and then I woke up a little more and it suddenly struck me that those were my toes.

Okay. That’s weird! Never had one quite like that!

I guess the closest thing I’ve had to what you describe is a couple of dreams where someone I’ve known to be a bit violent in real life, tries to kill me in my dream and I’ve woken up thinking, “a**ehole tried to kill me!”. While rationally realising they weren’t quite that kind of a**ehole, it took a while to shake the feeling off.
